Statement of artist Bipin Kumar Ghimire
Social realism emerged in the early 20th century and depicted the socio-political scenario of societies as a way of creating awareness and furthering social change. My academic study in the Soviet Union taught me the need for social realism in art and how it can shape political dialogue in favor of the underclass. Nepal’s stable government that has emerged from decades of people's struggle has created a favorable environment for artists to explore the genre to further the cause of socialism that our nation has cemented in her constitution. My paintings that are on display here also explore themes rooted in the hardships of the Nepali people. Unlike abstract works, my paintings communicate easily the subject matter to the viewer. I believe that it's not necessary to elaborate on them. As can be observed, skillful delineation of characters, traditional attire and settings are hallmarks of my work.
